Oct. 2005.
Bluebeard made the long crossing over the Caribbean, making landfall on
the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, right where our young bird from '04,
Jaws, has been spending the winter. He rested on the 24th and then moved
109 miles (175 km) south to the western shore of Lake Maracaibo sometime
on the 25th. He spend the night the next day there and continued south on
the 27th. Our last fix for him was mid afternoon, so he probably wasn't
finished for the day.
He is aimed pretty much straight for his 2004-5
wintering grounds. One of the consistent findings from our satellite
tracking is that these birds are as faithful to their wintering grounds as
they are to the nest sites.
He has flown 2982 mi (4801 km) in 39 days.
